Numbers of stitches for body and head are different, usually, and number of stitches for the head is usually bigger.
For example, the bunny on the left is made according to this
following pattern (body and head are made as one piece, from the bottom
of the body to the top of the head):
Ch 2 – two chain stitches.
Rnd 1: single crochet (sc) 6 times into the second (from the hook) stitch = 6 sc
Rnd 2: 2 sc in next sc around 6 times = 12 sc
Rnd 3: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around 6 times; sc in next sc = 18 sc
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around 6 times; sc
in next sc = 24 scRnd 5: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from *
around 6 times; sc in next sc = 30scRnd 6 – in back loops: sc around =
30 sc; sc in back loop of next sc
Rnds 7– 10 (4 rounds): sc around = 30 sc
Rnd 11: *sc in next 3 sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 6 times = 24 sc
Rnd 12 : sc around = 24 sc
Rnd 13: *sc in next 2 sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 6 times = 18 sc
Rnd 14 : sc around = 18 sc
Rnd 13: *sc in next sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 6 times = 12 sc
Change color
Rnd 16: *sc in next 2 sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 3 times = 9 sc
Rnds 17 – 18 : sc around = 9 sc
Rnd 19: 2 sc in next sc 9 times = 18 sc
Rnd 20: *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around 9 times = 27 sc
Rnd 21: *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around 9 times = 36 sc
Rnd 22: *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around 9 times = 45 sc
Rnds 23-28: sc around = 45 sc
Rnd 29: *sc in next 3 sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 9 times = 36 sc
Rnd 30: *sc in next 2 sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 9 times = 27 sc
Rnd 31: *sc in next sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 9 times = 18 sc
Rnd 32: *sc in next sc, Sc2tog; rep from * around 6 times = 12 sc
Rnd 33: * Sc2tog; rep from * around 6 times = 6 sc
The most number of stitches for the head is 45, it is much bigger than the most stitches for the body — 30.
The stitch difference for the bunny on the right is even more
dramatic: same 45 stitches for the head, but only 18 stitches for the
body.
I still have not decided which bunny’s proportions are more attractive.
The head-body stitch ratio is important, of course, but what
determines cuteness and attractiveness of a toy is details, small
things, hands, feet, flowers, eyes, whiskers, noses…
So after finishing body-head, when making something new, I usually
have several arms and legs, and tails. I am not sure whether I end up
with shorter of longer legs.
When in doubt, I say, pin it! I try different arms-legs combinations with pins. The view from
